Reading bowl book assignment

1)  In the book House Of The Scorpion, the author Nancy Farmer explores the themes of cruelty and how the world is not always fair. Some examples are that cows are forced to give birth to clones and the clones are just used to get replacement organs from. One other example is that orphans are turned into zombies A.K.A Eejits and clones (even intelligent ones) are treated like animals.

2) The protagonist is Matt Alacran, he just wants to have a good life free of problems. The Antagonist is the world, the world wants to make Matt's life miserable by putting all these sufferings and cruelties into his little world. The mentor seems to be the world as well, the world, despite all it's cruelty, want Matt to learn the harshness of life.

3) Over the course of the book, the main character Matt Alacran, learns what the world wanted him to learn, but he also learned that there is hope that you can have a good life, despite all good fortunes. Matt also changes from an unknowing person, to someone who knows about the cruelty of life, and then finally to a person who knows there is hope. I think what caused the final change was the finding of Maria's mother, who brought hope into his life, and what caused him to learn what the world wanted him to learn was the final act of cruelty which was the banishment to the boneyards.

4) The most memorable parts to me were the ones about his imprisonment as a clone because it was interesting to see how he lived in those conditions, and the living with the keepers, because that part held some strange ideas that I never had thought of before.

5) I really enjoyed this book, I would definitely recommend it for next year's reading bowl. I really enjoyed it because although this sounds mean, I like books with the theme that suffering must happen, only if they have good endings and not depressing ones.
