For this unit we will be writing about the book we have read already, Kick Me. We have already taken all the lit tests so you should be full of important aspects of themes we have discussed. Your project for this unit will to choose a theme we have discussed, and for extra credit you can do a theme we have not discussed. After you choose a theme, you will write an essay on how this theme is showed in the book Kick Me. Now I will show you the three main themes you can choose from. I will also give you an example of how I would back up my point.
In the book kick me, one theme is that society cannot exist without losers. One piece of proof is that winners are constantly shown, and the author compares the life of a loser to the life of a winner. When certain aspects of a story are emphasised, they become motifs which are keys to finding a theme. Since the life of a loser is a motif, it adds proof to my argument of this theme.
Now this is a minimum of what I expect, it will give you a higher grade if you incorporate symbols and how it connects to the theme. One example is the lip gloss, that represents the privilege of winners because it is a privilege itself, and it is a privilege that only the winners have. Now you can use this but you must prove it and connect it to the theme. I expect more than one symbol, and if you need help I can give you a list of motifs that you can turn into symbols.
Now for another theme.
Another theme is that even if we think things are going to horrible, they usually are better than we think . A piece of proof is that in many cases, for example, the using the showers in the locker rooms, although it was e traumatic, he was able to get undressed. In this case, Paul Feig thought he was going to never be able to get undressed, and get forced to do it, which would be even worse. But he manages to do it, and proves the point that even though he thought he would be forced to use the showers, he was able to use them himself. Although he never did get to use them because he was attacked by the boys in the shower room. But this is an example.
For this theme you must include a symbol but in this one, I ask that you use more scenes that prove this theme. If you can find a way to make the locker room work, I encourage you to do it, but if you feel too squeamish using this scene, you are free to use another one. And if you aren't satisfied with these two themes I have one more theme.
A theme in Paul Feig's book Kick Me, is that even though things may get very bad, you will survive. This theme is very closely linked to the previous theme, but is different.
One piece of proof that this theme has been portrayed is the importance of the last scene, the one where he went to the prom with Mary. In this scene, he was scared he would have to do "it" with Mary. He continues to worry and worry about what do at the prom and doing "it". However, when he does go to the prom, he survives. And he actually has fun on prom night whereas in all his other prom dates, he does not have time. And he had fun after he had the prom, which means that not only did he survive, but he was not traumatized by the experience and unable to have fun.
Now that again was only an example, and for this one, I do not expect any more of one thing, scenes or symbols, but I expect a good connection. If you were unable to choose one you think you could do, come to my office and I'll try to help. But maybe you'll make up you're mind tomorrow.
